One of the biggest problems in pop music is that there’s simply not enough room in the charts for everyone at the same time. Quite often new artists are signed with the intention of snapping up the fanbase of someone who already exists – see Ke$ha successfully with Avril Lavigne fans. In the words of the fabulous Holestar “To flavours of the month; a month is short. There’ll always be someone younger and hungrier coming down the stairs behind you.” And now it’s time Rihanna minded her step…
A couple of years ago Rita Ora was just a former Sylvia Young student who’d appeared on a couple of Craig David (!) tracks and toyed with attempting to represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 before withdrawing as she “Didn’t feel ready” (Translation: She’d been scouted and earmarked for a non-Jade Ewen-shaped future). If her first No.1 smash with DJ Fresh, ‘Hot Right Now’ makes you think one-hit wonder, check out the list of people Rihanna’s label Roc Nation have supposedly roped in to work on her debut album:
Darkchild FutureCut Makeba Riddick Tricky Stewart Chase & Status FrankMusik Ester Dean Toby Gad Kanye West Drake Syience Aundrea Martin Ruth Anne Cunningham James Fauntleroy Makeba Riddick Stargate The Ting Tings The-Dream Diplo will.i.am
Rihanna has released 6 albums in 7 years, an admirable feat in keeping up with the ravenous appetite of Facebook generation music consumers. But frankly, it’s time she took a break. When the only way you can get attention is by roping in the man who beat you to a pulp to sing “Give it to her in the worst way/Can’t wait to blow her candles out” on a remix, you come across as not just desperate but boring. If I were Roc Nation I’d not just be preparing for a possible backlash/change in tastes, but start making contingency plans to fill the impending gap. Funny that…
Not a bad first “proper” UK single, eh? And as she’s being launched on both sides of the Atlantic, she’s got a suitably Yank-friendly US debut ”Party and Bullshit’ on its way too. If I were Rihanna I’d stop canoodling with my former domestic-abuser, up my game and cling on to my weave for dear life. Rita is clearly making a snatch for it.
Rita Ora is coming (for Rihanna’s weave).
